UNILAG, LAGOS STATE – The Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, has achieved a milestone by producing 18 female first-class graduates for the 2023/2024 academic session.
This historic accomplishment was announced during the first-degree awards at UNILAG’s 55th Convocation ceremony on Tuesday, January 14.
The three-day event will see a total of 16,590 students graduate. Of this number, 9,865 students will receive first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 will be awarded postgraduate degrees. Additionally, 66 students will graduate from the UNILAG Business School, ULBS.
The trailblazing Mass Communication first-class graduates include Feranmi Abiola, Ahuruele Akani, Oyindamola Arikawe, Ifedayo Ayilaran, Demiladeogo Bankole, Olaide Bankole, Eniola Daramola, Faith Enang, Temiloluwa Igbinlade, Joy Imanah, Ifeoma Iwelunmor, Chelsea Jegede, Opeyemi Kareem, Eunice Obidi, Frances Odogu, Mofesola Olanrewaju, Funmilola Onabanjo, and Peace Onuoha.
The university commended the graduates for their dedication, hard work, and resilience in attaining academic excellence.
Sharing their experiences, some of the graduates recounted the challenges they encountered while balancing academics and other commitments. Peace Onuoha, one of the graduates, revealed that she initially aspired to study law but found inspiration in setting a goal to graduate with a first-class degree in Mass Communication.
“Despite facing intense pressure and balancing multiple jobs and projects, I managed to excel academically and even landed an internship at a multinational company,” she said.
For Temiloluwa Igbinlade, transitioning from secondary school to university while juggling multiple commitments was a challenging experience. She attributed her ability to overcome these obstacles to her faith and unwavering determination.
Eunice Obidi, another trailblazing first-class graduate, emphasized the critical role of discipline and prioritization in academic success. She credited her remarkable performance to maintaining a sharp focus and mastering effective time management.
In addition to these accomplishments, other outstanding achievements were celebrated during the convocation. Christian Uwagwu emerged as the best-graduating student in the Faculty of Education with a CGPA of 4.78, while Ibrahim Sefiu was honored as the best-graduating student in the Faculty of Social Sciences, achieving a CGPA of 4.82.
During her address at the ceremony, UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, spotlighted the university’s groundbreaking strides in innovation, infrastructure development, and academic excellence. She highlighted several notable achievements from 2024, including the establishment of the MED-AFRICA GMP Laboratory, the first of its kind in West Africa. Housed within the Faculty of Pharmacy, this $450,000 cutting-edge facility supports advanced research on HIV prevention.

Professor Ogunsola also mentioned the inauguration of the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development, and Regulatory Science, ACEDHARS. Funded by the World Bank, the center focuses on developing indigenous plants for medical applications.
Another key milestone was the launch of the Green Air Initiative, which saw the introduction of eight electric buses for the transportation of students and staff on campus.
The Vice Chancellor also expressed gratitude for generous contributions that are shaping the university’s future, including Tunde Fanimokun’s pledge of N14.5 billion for hostels and research facilities, as well as significant infrastructural projects from the Lagos State Government.
