Fire Destroys Osun Food Market, Millions Lost

Ipetumodu, Osun StateA late-night fire has ravaged Akinola Market, a popular food commodity market in Ipetumodu, headquarters of Ife-North Local Government Area of Osun State, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The market, known for its weekly operations on Fridays, was reportedly engulfed in flames shortly after business activities concluded. The fire began in the yam section before spreading to other parts of the market, leaving a trail of destruction.

According to Sola Omilana, a resident, the news of the fire drew people to the market early Saturday morning as they sympathized with affected shop owners.

The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, Kehinde Adeleke. She attributed the fire to negligence by shop owners who had burned refuse after business hours but failed to extinguish the flames before leaving.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire resulted from dirt set ablaze by shop owners after the day’s business. Unfortunately, they left without ensuring the fire was completely out,” Adeleke explained.

She added that food items worth millions of naira were lost in the incident, highlighting the need for caution to prevent such disasters in the future.

The tragedy has left many shop owners devastated, with efforts underway to assess the full extent of the damages.
