Six fatalities and many injuries reported in stampede at Indian temple.

Indian Temple —A tragic stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Andhra Pradesh, India, resulted in the loss of at least six lives and left several others injured.

The incident occurred as a large crowd gathered to collect entrance tokens to the temple, a significant site in Hinduism. Prem Kumar Jain, a spokesperson for the ruling Telugu Desam Party in the state, expressed condolences over the tragedy, acknowledging the lives lost and offering prayers for the departed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his sympathies to the families of the victims, expressing sorrow over the loss of lives in the stampede.

Deadly accidents during religious gatherings have been a recurrent issue in India, often attributed to inadequate crowd management and safety measures.

For instance, a similar incident during a Hindu festival in Uttar Pradesh in July 2024 resulted in the deaths of 121 individuals, while a banned fireworks display at a temple in Kerala in 2016 claimed 112 lives.

The recent stampede occurred just days before the commencement of the Kumbh Mela, a six-week Hindu festival known for its collective prayers and sacred bathing rituals.

With expectations of up to 400 million pilgrims attending the event, organizers are faced with the considerable challenge of ensuring the safety and security of participants to prevent any further tragedies.
