Ibadan, Nigeria — The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has declined bail applications for Naomi Silekunola, Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdullahi Fasasi, all implicated in the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, which claimed the lives of 35 children.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Olawoyi on Tuesday, followed a request by the state’s Attorney General for additional time to conclude investigations into the December incident.
Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, Oriyomi Hamzat, a popular broadcaster and proprietor of Agidigbo FM, and Abdullahi Fasasi, the school’s principal, were arrested after the children’s Funfair stampede.
The hearing of their bail applications was conducted under tight security, with the court adjourning Silekunola’s case until next week.
Commenting on the case, Governor Seyi Makinde emphasized the importance of accountability. While he stated he was not opposed to the suspects being granted bail, he maintained that the case must proceed, irrespective of the status of those involved.
“This tragic incident must be addressed through the proper legal process. The status of those implicated will not deter justice,” Governor Makinde insisted.
The court’s decision reflects a commitment to thorough investigations into the events leading to the tragic loss of young lives in Ibadan.
