Akande Urges Universities to Produce Skilled Graduates

Former Osun State Governor, Chief Adebisi Akande, has called on Nigerian universities to prioritize skills acquisition in their curricula to produce graduates capable of driving economic growth.

During a visit by Ekiti State University (EKSU) Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatola Ayodele, and other principal officers to his Ila-Orangun residence, Akande emphasized the urgent need for a shift in the nation’s educational approach.

“Universities must avoid producing graduates who cannot contribute to the economy. If you want global competitiveness, you can’t wait,” he stated, warning against awarding degrees without equipping students with practical skills.

Akande likened education to a foundation for learning how to work, urging universities to adapt to global standards and prioritize relevance in their offerings.

Commendation for EKSU

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart commended EKSU for being recognized by Times Higher Education as Nigeria’s best state university. He attributed this achievement to visionary leadership and a commitment to excellence.

Prof. Ayodele expressed gratitude for Akande’s guidance, reaffirming the university’s dedication to producing graduates equipped with both academic knowledge and vocational skills.

“No student graduates from EKSU without acquiring relevant vocational skills. This ensures they are prepared for meaningful engagements beyond white-collar jobs,” Ayodele stated.

Akande, an EKSU alumnus, praised the university’s management for fostering innovation and qualitative education. He urged other Nigerian universities to follow EKSU’s example by integrating skills development into their programs and transforming the education sector to meet global demands.
