Iran has announced 2025 as a pivotal year for its nuclear agenda, targeting the United States and Israel, amid escalating tensions.
Speaking in Beijing on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Araqchi stated, “2025 will be an important year regarding Iran’s nuclear issue.” His remarks suggest Tehran may be preparing for potential reimplementation of the U.S.’s “maximum pressure” policy under President-elect Donald Trump.
In 2018, Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal established by former President Barack Obama, under which Iran agreed to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for eased U.S. and U.N. sanctions. Analysts speculate Iran fears that Trump’s return to power could embolden Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities while intensifying sanctions on Iran’s vital oil sector.
The announcement comes as the Iranian rial plummeted to an all-time low against the U.S. dollar on Saturday, trading at 820,500 per dollar on the unofficial market. This economic turmoil reflects growing uncertainty surrounding Trump’s anticipated inauguration on January 20, 2025.
Iran’s stance signals heightened regional and global tensions, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape in the years to come.
