NCC Denies Reports of Telecom Tariff Hike Approval

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has dismissed claims by a media outlet alleging it approved a 40% hike in telecommunications service tariffs starting January 2025.

The report claimed the tariff increase would result in telephone calls costing N15.40 per minute, SMS priced at N5.60, and a minimum cost of N1,400 for a 1GB data bundle. These claims sparked public concern over the potential strain on consumers already grappling with economic hardship and rising living costs.

A senior NCC official, speaking to our correspondent, labeled the report as “fake news,” describing it as baseless and speculative. The official emphasized that the NCC follows a well-defined procedure for considering tariff adjustments, as outlined in the 2003 NCC Act. This includes extensive consultations with industry stakeholders and a cost-based study to ensure any recommendation aligns with economic realities and protects consumer interests.

The official assured the public that no approval for a tariff increase has been granted and urged Nigerians to disregard the claims. He reiterated that any potential changes would involve thorough evaluations, taking into account macroeconomic variables such as inflation and exchange rates.

While telecom operators have repeatedly called for a tariff review to reflect the current economic environment, the NCC has maintained its commitment to ensuring fair and balanced measures for both consumers and industry stakeholders.

In October 2024, Gbenga Adebayo, President of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), highlighted the need for sustainable pricing during the 93rd Telecom Consumer Parliament in Abuja. He stressed that rising operational costs make tariff adjustments necessary to sustain the industry and improve service delivery.

Adebayo stated, “For the gains of the past 22 years in the industry to be preserved, Nigerians will need to pay more for data. However, this must be approached through measured actions, sustainable discussions, and partnerships with the government.”

The NCC reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding consumer interests while supporting the growth and sustainability of the telecommunications sector.
