The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has described this year’s Christmas as bittersweet, marked by a mix of joy and sorrow following recent tragic stampedes at charity events in Abuja and Anambra State.
In a statement commemorating the festive season, Archbishop Okoh expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and injuries caused by the incidents. He attributed the tragedies to growing desperation among Nigerians, exacerbated by economic hardship. He also decried the decline in societal values such as patience, orderliness, and mutual respect.
“These unfortunate incidents mirror the harsh realities many Nigerians face daily and underscore the urgent need for the government to prioritize food security,” Okoh stated.
The CAN President extended heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and those injured, urging them to find solace in the love of Jesus Christ, whose birth represents hope and renewal.
While commending the philanthropists who organized the charity events, Okoh cautioned against discouraging such acts of kindness. He highlighted the critical role these initiatives play in supporting the less privileged, especially during challenging times.
He called on government leaders to intensify efforts in combating hunger through policies aimed at revitalizing agriculture, reducing food prices, and addressing social inequality. According to Okoh, decisive action is needed to ensure that no Nigerian goes hungry.
As Christians across the country celebrate Christmas, Archbishop Okoh appealed for peace, patience, and orderliness, emphasizing the shared responsibility of citizens in building a more equitable and compassionate society.
