The Ondo State government has expressed unhappiness over the tragic deaths of at least 20 persons in an explosion from a fuel-laden tanker at Ore in Odigbo local government.
The victims were burnt to death on Sunday as the fallen petrol tanker, whose content had spilled along the Benin-Ore-Sagamu Expressway, burst into flames.
A statement from the commissioner of information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, said the government was “devastated” by the “avoidable, unfortunate tragedy”, which it described as “gripping” and “mind-numbing”.
He commiserated with the families of victims of the blast and promised to reach out to them, said the statement.
It, however, cautioned people against scooping oil from fallen tankers, which, according to reports, had caused the tanker to catch fire.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ezekiel SonAllah confirmed that eight persons died in the incident which occurred on Sunday evening as residents were scooping fuel from the downed tanker.
