The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Reverend Ignatius Kaigama, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of more than ten lives during a stampede at Holy Trinity Parish, Maitama, Abuja. The incident occurred during a food distribution exercise organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Archbishop Kaigama, in a statement, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and those injured in the unfortunate event, describing it as “a devastating blow” to the community. He reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting the poor and vulnerable, urging solidarity and compassion in the face of the tragedy.
The Archbishop called on the faithful and the public to offer prayers for the souls of the departed, speedy recovery for the injured, and strength for grieving families.
Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the cause of the stampede, which has reignited discussions about the need for improved safety measures during public events, particularly those involving the distribution of relief materials.
