IGP Orders Probe Into Stampede Tragedies Across Nigeria

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed a thorough investigation into recent stampedes linked to the distribution of palliatives and relief materials across the country during the festive season. The incidents have led to tragic losses in several states.

In Ibadan, Oyo State, a children’s funfair on December 18, 2024, turned tragic when a stampede claimed the lives of 35 children, leaving many others critically injured.

Just three days later, on December 21, chaos erupted at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, during a food distribution event for vulnerable residents. Ten people were killed, and several others sustained injuries.

Similarly, a palliative distribution organized by philanthropist Obi Jackson in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others.

Speaking in Abuja on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the police chief had ordered Commissioners of Police in the affected states to investigate the incidents and pursue legal actions where appropriate.

“The Inspector-General has mandated a comprehensive investigation into these tragic events to identify lapses and ensure accountability,” Adejobi stated.

The police boss further urged organizers of relief distribution events to improve planning and coordination to prevent future occurrences.
