NDLEA Destroys Six-Hectare Hemp Farm in Ogun, Arrests Four Suspects

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, has destroyed a six-hectare cannabis plantation in Alaka village as part of its intensified efforts to combat drug-related crimes in the state.

Announcing the operation during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Thursday, the Commandant, Mr. Tijani Rabe, disclosed that four individuals were arrested in connection with the farm and are currently under investigation.

Highlighting the agency’s achievements in 2024, Rabe revealed that the command apprehended 675 drug offenders and seized 9.7 tons of solid drugs alongside 537.81 liters of liquid-based illicit substances.

The NDLEA’s special operation, tagged “Operation Closed Gates,” was particularly successful. In November, the operation intercepted 100 bags of cannabis, weighing 1.3 tons, and led to the arrest of a key suspect.

“Operation Closed Gates was part of our Yuletide initiative, targeting drug merchants and syndicates while sealing all entry points into Ogun State,” Rabe explained.

The command also ramped up its advocacy efforts, conducting 128 sensitization programs in schools, workplaces, and communities. These initiatives reportedly impacted over 27,648 people, raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

On the legal front, the agency secured 221 convictions against drug offenders, with several cases still under prosecution.

“The convictions range across various terms of imprisonment, reflecting our unwavering commitment to justice and deterrence,” Rabe added.

The NDLEA’s achievements in 2024 build on prior efforts, including a similar operation in 2022, where a large cannabis farm was uncovered, and seven suspects were arrested.

Rabe reaffirmed the command’s dedication to eradicating drug cultivation and trafficking, urging the public to support their efforts in ensuring a drug-free Ogun State.
