Tinubu Appoints Aisha Garba as UBEC Executive Secretary

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aisha Garba, an international development expert, as the new Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

Garba, a Senior Education Specialist with the World Bank, brings over 24 years of experience leading impactful educational programs across Nigeria, Ghana, Somalia, Kenya, the USA, and the UK. Her expertise includes the end-to-end design and implementation of educational reforms aimed at fostering human and economic development.

With more than 15 years at the World Bank, Garba has contributed to sustainable education solutions, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected environments. Her vast network and experience with governments, development partners, and local communities position her to drive transformative initiatives in Nigeria’s basic education sector.

Garba was part of the team that successfully achieved Nigeria’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and has worked with global organizations, including the UK’s Department for International Development, BOND-UK, Regent Foundation, and Muslim Aid Organization.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Computer Studies from Petra American University, Jordan, and a Master’s in International Development from the University of Birmingham, UK.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that President Tinubu expects Garba to champion the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, ensuring Nigerian children receive quality education and become globally competitive.
