Southampton Dismiss Martin after Tottenham fixtures.

Southampton have dismissed manager Russell Martin following a crushing 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, which left the team nine points away from Premier League safety.

Martin, 38, was instrumental in the club’s promotion last season, guiding Southampton to a play-off final victory over Leeds United at Wembley. However, their return to the Premier League has been challenging, with the team recording 13 losses in 16 matches and scoring a league-low of 11 goals. Their only victory came in November, a narrow 1-0 win over Everton.

In a statement, the club acknowledged Martin’s contributions, particularly last season’s play-off success, but stressed the need for immediate improvement. “The reality of our situation is clear,” the statement said. “We thank Russell and his staff for their hard work and dedication over the past 18 months.”

Simon Rusk, manager of Southampton’s Under-21 team, will step in as interim manager. His first test will be a Carabao Cup quarterfinal clash against league leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin’s departure coincides with Wolves sacking manager Gary O’Neil earlier the same day, marking a turbulent period for Premier League managers.
