NAFDAC Denies Approving Lung Detox Tea as promoting smoking

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has dismissed claims that it approved a lung detox tea allegedly marketed as promoting smoking.

In a statement issued Saturday by its Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, NAFDAC clarified on social media platform X that the agency had outrightly rejected the application for the product’s registration due to its unsubstantiated and potentially harmful claims.

The tea, marketed under names such as “Lung Detox Tea” or “Smokers Pride,” falsely suggested that smoking could be rendered healthy when combined with the product. NAFDAC emphasized that it has not approved the product or any similar items making such misleading claims.

“The attention of NAFDAC has been drawn to a misleading video circulating on social media, alleging that NAFDAC approved a herbal product claiming that ‘smoking is healthy’ when used with their product,” the statement read. “NAFDAC categorically states that this claim is false and unfounded. The application for registration was outrightly rejected due to the unsubstantiated and dangerous nature of the product’s claims.”

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and urged consumers to be cautious of unapproved products.
