Opposition Protests as More Lawmakers Defect to APC

The House of Representatives witnessed intense debates on Thursday following the defection of Alfred Iliya, representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency of Plateau State, from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaker of the House, Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, announced Mr. Iliya’s defection during plenary, sparking strong protests from opposition lawmakers, who argued that the move failed to meet constitutional requirements.

The opposition dismissed Mr. Iliya’s claim of division within the Labour Party as justification for his defection, asserting that there is no evidence of a legitimate factional crisis within the party.

In defense, APCZamfara APC rejects state’s 2025 budget proposal lawmakers maintained that internal disputes within the Labour Party were well-documented and valid grounds for the defection.

Mr. Iliya’s switch follows a wave of recent defections to the APC. Over the past few weeks, seven opposition lawmakers have joined the ruling party—six from the Labour Party and one from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The trend has reignited debates over the legality and political consequences of party-switching in Nigeria, with opposition members questioning the commitment to constitutional processes.
