The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to press freedom, despite occasional challenges. Speaking at the 2024 Annual Conference of the International Press Institute (IPI) in Abuja, Idris highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to media freedom and the protection of civic space in the country.
Themed “Democracy, Media Freedom, and the Imperative of Protecting the Nigerian Civic Space,” the conference brought together stakeholders to discuss the interplay between media rights and democratic principles.
Upholding Press Freedom
“While challenges exist, Nigeria has largely enjoyed an open and free press environment. Since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, and I became Minister in August, we have consistently upheld our commitment to press freedom,” Idris said.
He noted the proliferation of print, broadcast, and digital media outlets as evidence of the country’s robust press environment. Idris also praised President Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen the judiciary to safeguard fundamental rights, including freedom of speech and association.
“The President, as a media entrepreneur and a key figure in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement, recognizes the press as a cornerstone of our democratic system,” he added.
Balancing Rights and Responsibilities
Idris emphasized the importance of balancing freedoms with responsibilities, urging the media to foster constructive debates while respecting differing viewpoints. He called on journalists to use their platform responsibly to shape public opinion and hold institutions accountable.
“Respect, understanding, and accommodation are essential in exercising civic freedoms,” Idris stated.
Economic Reforms Under the Renewed Hope Agenda
Addressing the nation’s economic reforms, the Minister outlined the government’s initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at driving economic diversification, human capital development, and inclusive growth.
He highlighted new tax reforms designed to reduce the burden on vulnerable Nigerians while simplifying compliance for businesses.
“These reforms include tax exemptions for individuals and businesses and redirect funds previously spent on subsidy programs to critical sectors such as infrastructure, student loans, agriculture, and social programs,” Idris explained.
The Minister concluded by emphasizing the government’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria, grounded in strong democratic institutions and a globally competitive economy.
