Twins Foundation Seeks Global Recognition for Mary Slessor

The Twins Alive Foundation, a non-governmental organization, is urging the United Nations and the Nigerian government to designate December 2 as an international day to honor Mary Slessor, the Scottish missionary renowned for ending the practice of killing twins in Nigeria.

Foundation founder and twin, Mr. Jude Idiongesit Mbonmkponam, emphasized in an interview with Radio Nigeria that such recognition would immortalize Slessor’s humanitarian contributions. The proposed date, December 2, marks Slessor’s birth in 1848, adding historical significance to the initiative.

Mary Slessor’s Fight Against Twin Infanticide

Mary Slessor, a Scottish Presbyterian missionary, dedicated her life to eradicating the cultural practice of twin infanticide in regions now known as Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Abia States. At the time, twins were believed to bring misfortune and were often killed. Slessor’s advocacy for women’s rights and her promotion of education and Christianity saved countless lives, reshaping societal attitudes toward twins.

Her work remains celebrated globally, especially in Scotland and among Nigerian twins, who continue to push for formal recognition of her legacy.

Call for Government Support

The foundation has also appealed for the creation of a government fund to assist parents of twins and multiple births who face financial difficulties. National Coordinator Mr. Idongesit Mbukmkponnam stressed that such support is crucial to prevent child abandonment.

Mrs. Edidiong Eshiet, a mother of twins and triplets, highlighted the special care required for multiple-birth children, while Miss Prisca Ndem, a twin from Uyo, urged the government to prioritize financial assistance for vulnerable families.

Honoring Slessor’s Legacy

As part of an annual tribute, a delegation led by the National President of Twins Alive Foundation visited Mary Slessor’s gravesite in Use Ikot Oku, Ibiono LGA, Akwa Ibom State. Twin Chief Vanuanikizibe Otobo, Secretary of the 2024 Twins National Convention, described the visit as a powerful homage to Slessor’s enduring impact.

“Her selfless dedication continues to inspire us. We are committed to preserving our heritage and honoring those who have made significant societal contributions,” he said.

For 15 years, under the leadership of Twin Jude Idongesit Harona, the foundation has organized these pilgrimages, fostering a lasting connection between Mary Slessor’s legacy and future generations.
