The organised labour unions in Cross River State are set to embark on an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the new minimum wage by the state government.
The Cross River State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Gregory Ulayi, said on Saturday that workers would commence the strike at midnight on Sunday if the government failed to implement the N70,000 minimum wage.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress in the state, Monday Ogbodum, affirmed that unless the government implements the new wage regime, there would be no backing down from the planned industrial action.
According to Ogbodum, negotiations with the state government are ongoing, but this will not deter the unions from proceeding with the strike if necessary.
“Yes, we are still in talks with the government. We had a meeting on Thursday and another on Friday that ended late in the evening. There is going to be another meeting today, but that does not mean everything is resolved, though the government has shown some level of seriousness.
“Our position is that even if we sign any document or agreement today, that does not necessarily amount to implementation,” he said.
