Oyetola Orders Waterways Code Enforcement After Kogi Tragedy

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has directed the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to enforce strict adherence to the Waterways Transportation Code in response to a fatal boat accident in Kupa Ebbe Village, Kogi State.

In a statement, Oyetola extended his condolences to the Kogi State government and the families of the victims, emphasizing the need for accountability and enforcement of safety regulations. He also instructed NIWA to prosecute violators to prevent future incidents.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones in this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,” Oyetola said.

The minister called on boat operators and community leaders to discourage night-time boat trips, stressing that community cooperation is essential for ensuring safety. “The government alone cannot fully guarantee safety without the active support of local communities,” he added.

Oyetola commended the prompt rescue efforts led by NIWA and the Kogi State government and reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving waterway safety. He highlighted ongoing collaboration with state governments and stakeholders to strengthen safety protocols and prevent future tragedies.
