Gowon Calls for National Unity, Inclusive Leadership

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd.), has emphasized the need for national unity and inclusive leadership, urging Nigerians to prioritize the collective good over regional and sectional interests. He made this appeal during a meeting with the League of Northern Democrats (LND) in Abuja, led by former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau.

Reflecting on his leadership during the Nigerian Civil War, Gowon underscored the importance of collaboration and a national-first approach. He humorously criticized the title “Executive Governor” as sounding authoritarian. “Once you’re a governor, you already have executive power,” he quipped, calling for humility in leadership.

Gowon highlighted the north’s pivotal role in promoting democracy and unity, stressing that regional initiatives should serve the nation’s broader interests. “Whatever the north does must serve Nigeria’s interest. Our focus should always be on unity,” he stated. He also recalled the strategic creation of states during his tenure to prevent regional dominance and ensure national cohesion, emphasizing that this move helped to preserve Nigeria’s unity.

Addressing the current challenges facing the north, such as insecurity and poverty, Gowon called for renewed efforts to foster stability and development. He also urged the region to embrace its diversity as a unifying strength. “Our differences enrich us. We should use them to unite rather than divide,” he said, encouraging the LND to collaborate with other groups on constitutional reforms to ensure balanced governance.

In his response, Shekarau outlined the LND’s mission to reposition the north as a leader in political, economic, and cultural spheres while promoting national unity. “The LND was born out of a shared sense of urgency to address insecurity, poverty, and the erosion of societal values,” Shekarau explained, emphasizing self-reliance and collective responsibility.

He called on northern elites to join the movement, describing the LND as a coalition of patriots dedicated to Nigeria’s progress. “We aim to reclaim the north’s historical role as a beacon of leadership,” Shekarau declared. Gowon expressed optimism about the League’s potential and pledged his continued support. “You’ve started something significant. I’m always available to support your efforts,” he concluded.
