Nigeria-China Trade Hits $22.6bn in 2023 — Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has lauded the growing trade volume between Nigeria and China, highlighting its significance as one of the highest in Africa.

Speaking during a meeting with a Chinese delegation led by Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the strong and mutually respectful ties between the two nations.

In a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Shettima noted, “In 2023, our trade volume with China reached $22.6 billion, making it one of the highest in Africa, with an annual growth rate of 33 percent.”

The Vice President underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral relations, describing China as a crucial partner in Nigeria’s economic development.

Zhang Qingwei, while addressing the meeting, hailed the strategic partnership between the two countries as a pivotal step in deepening ties. He remarked that the relationship is entering a new phase, promising further economic collaboration.

The delegation also included the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, and other senior officials such as Chio Bing, Vice Chairman of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress; Hon. Wang Li-Sha of the Committee of Institutions; and Hon. Sung Si Dung, a member of the Constitution and Law Committee and the China-Nigeria group.

The visit is expected to bolster trade and diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, reinforcing their position as key partners in Africa-Asia cooperation.
