Edo Gov. Launches 16-Member Committee to Audit State Assets

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated a 16-member Assets Verification Committee tasked with assessing the existence, condition, location, and ownership of all state assets.

The committee, chaired by Dr. Ernest Afolabi-Umakhihe, was inaugurated at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City. Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the initiative is part of his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, aligning with its anti-corruption stance.

“This is not a witch-hunt but a necessary step following the findings of the Transition Committee, led by Dr. Pius Odubu, which submitted its report after my inauguration on November 12, 2024,” the governor clarified. The verification will cover both fixed and movable assets, including tangible and intangible properties, to establish a comprehensive record of state-owned resources.

Dr. Afolabi-Umakhihe described the committee’s task as a fact-finding mission aimed at addressing discrepancies identified in the transition report. He assured that the process would be carried out with integrity and transparency.

Prince Kassim Afegbua, another committee member, dismissed allegations from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about the alleged shutdown of the state’s e-governance platform, describing them as baseless. He reiterated that the committee’s focus remains strictly within its mandate.

Dr. Patrick Obahiagbon added that the exercise is designed to strengthen financial accountability, uncover irregularities, and safeguard public assets.

The committee is expected to deliver a comprehensive report on Edo State’s assets, ensuring proper management and enhanced accountability. The findings will be made public upon the completion of the assignment.
