The Vice Chancellor of Wesley University, Ondo, Rt. Rev. Prof. Sunday Samuel Obeka, has revealed that 10% of the university’s best graduating students for the 2023/2024 academic session are deaf scholars.
Speaking during a press conference in Ondo town to announce the university’s 13th convocation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Prof. Obeka disclosed that a total of 39 students achieved first-class honors this year.
Inclusive Education at Wesley University
According to Prof. Obeka, the university runs an inclusive education system that accommodates students with disabilities. He emphasized that Wesley University remains a pioneer institution in Nigeria in embracing inclusive education.
“Out of 230 students graduating this year, we observed that about 10% of the best students are deaf scholars. In Wesley University, we have deaf students specializing in various fields, including computer science, law, social services, and other programs,” he said.
Highlighting the university’s commitment to supporting students with disabilities, the Vice Chancellor added:
“Last year, six deaf students graduated at the upper level, and this year, eight deaf students are among the graduating class.”
“We are collaborating with Gallaudet University, Washington D.C., to advance education for the deaf.”
He also noted the existence of a Directorate of Deaf and Special Needs Education at Wesley University, which continues to empower the deaf community and employ more deaf scholars.
Call for Government Support for Private Medical Colleges
Prof. Obeka urged the federal government to extend financial support to private universities, especially those with medical colleges.
“The government should assist private universities like Wesley University in paying salaries and providing infrastructure. Our medical and allied health sciences programs—covering pharmacy, medicine and surgery, physiology, physiotherapy, and other courses—are designed to address the challenges in Nigeria’s health sector,” he stated.
Wesley University is also partnering with Cliff College, renowned for its theological education programs, to enhance its offerings in theology. The Vice Chancellor noted that the university provides theological education up to the Ph.D. level.
Prof. Obeka announced the following events as part of the convocation: Convocation Lecture: Delivered by Evangelist Sunday Ogwuche on Friday, November 22.
Degree Conferment and Awards: Scheduled for Saturday, November 23.

The Vice Chancellor also shared that erudite scholars, entrepreneurs, and notable personalities will be honored during the ceremony.
