President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), one of Nigeria’s highest national honors, on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The presentation took place during a bilateral meeting at the State House in Abuja on Sunday.
The honor was awarded to Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his exemplary leadership and as a gesture to strengthen diplomatic ties between Nigeria and India.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of fostering a deeper and more strategic partnership between the two nations. “Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we are committed to broadening it for the mutual benefit of our two countries,” Tinubu stated.
Acknowledging Modi’s achievements, Tinubu praised his dedication to democratic values and his ability to lead a diverse nation through three consecutive election victories. “This award symbolizes Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to India as a partner,” he added.
In his response, Prime Minister Modi extended condolences over the recent floods in Nigeria, including those in Maiduguri, Borno State. As a gesture of solidarity, he pledged 20 tons of relief materials to support the country’s humanitarian efforts, reaffirming India’s commitment to its partnership with Nigeria under Tinubu’s administration.
