Ebonyi Assembly prohibits unauthorized motor parks.

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to all illegal motor park operators in Abakaliki to cease operations or face legal consequences.

The directive was conveyed in a statement released by the Assembly’s Public Relations Officer, Sylvester Egede, following a meeting between the Ebonyi State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transport, led by Deacon Joseph Ununu, and the managers of various motor parks in the state.

The illegal motor parks, which stretch from Vanco, Presco, down to Onuebonyi Junction in Abakaliki, have been instructed to halt their activities within the specified timeframe or risk facing the full force of the law.

The statement emphasized that these unauthorized loading parks not only disrupt the beautification of the state capital but also impact negatively on the government’s Internally Generated Revenue.

Furthermore, the state lawmakers mandated all mass transit operators in the state to provide evidence of payment of their Internally Generated Revenue to the committee clerk by the close of work on Friday, November 15th.

The Committee Chairman also directed vehicle operators to operate solely within the designated motor parks provided by the Ebonyi State government, instead of engaging in pick-up and drop-off services on the streets.

The committee highlighted the lack of standard facilities such as toilets, fire-fighting equipment, waiting halls, and solid flooring within the motor parks, which are vital for the comfort and safety of passengers.

Transport operators were urged to make the necessary improvements to their premises and provide all required documentation confirming their registration as mass transit operators to the committee.

The Vice Chairman of the Committee, Hon Ukie Ezeali, assured that the committee’s actions were not aimed at victimizing anyone and pledged to protect compliant mass transit operators in the state.

In response, the operational manager of the Ebonyi State Transport Service, EBOTRANS, Mr. Innocent Obiahu, expressed gratitude for the dialogue and requested repairs to the central park’s entrance.
