The Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is facilitating the study, which is funded by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) and aims to replace fossil fuel-based power generation with greener alternatives. Nigeria wants to have net-zero emissions by 2060 and universal access to electricity by 2030. However, since they account for 70% of emissions in the electricity sector, diesel and gasoline generator sets present a significant problem. The study offers accurate genset number data collecting, which is essential for switching to greener options.

A scalable, reproducible, and affordable route to replacing fossil fuels is made possible by the Lagos State study, according to SEforALL. “This research will inform targeted energy policies, tailored solutions, and consumption patterns.”

The study’s salient features include: The creation of a statewide fossil fuel displacement program; the availability of spatial data on the Nigeria Integrated Energy Planning (IEP) platform; and the testing of data gathering techniques for nationwide repetition In line with the distributed solar photovoltaic initiative in Lagos State and the growing demand for power Lagos State, the biggest economic center in Nigeria, sets the standard for other governments to follow with their innovative endeavor.

Lagos State makes a significant step toward scalable and sustainable renewable energy solutions with this ground-breaking study, which is in line with larger national energy transition goals.
