World Tolerance Day: IAWPA Names Gov. Fubara ‘Most Tolerant’

As the United Nations (UN) marks the International Day of Tolerance on November 16, the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) has recognized Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State as Nigeria’s “Most Tolerant Governor.” The accolade acknowledges Governor Fubara’s dedication to promoting peace, inclusivity, and unity in a political environment often marked by division and tension.

In a statement signed by IAWPA’s International Spokesman, Ambassador Emmanuel Nkweke, the association praised Governor Fubara’s commitment to tolerance, noting his efforts to bridge divides and encourage constructive dialogue among diverse communities in Rivers State. “Governor Fubara has demonstrated resilience and a steadfast commitment to peace, even in the face of significant challenges,” Nkweke stated. “His leadership exemplifies the values of understanding and respect, essential for fostering a culture of tolerance in governance.”

Governor Fubara’s inclusive approach, which emphasizes engagement with critics and finding common ground, has set a noteworthy example for other leaders across Nigeria, the statement noted. “Despite facing considerable opposition, Governor Fubara has maintained an open-door policy that respects all voices. His approach has been a beacon of hope, proving that cooperation and mutual respect can drive effective governance,” IAWPA’s statement read.

Ambassador Nkweke highlighted specific initiatives undertaken by the governor to strengthen social cohesion and community dialogue within Rivers State. These efforts, he said, have contributed positively to conflict resolution and the promotion of peace in the state. Governor Fubara’s initiatives, from community engagement programs to policies fostering inclusivity, illustrate his belief that tolerance and understanding are foundational to sustainable development.

His approach reflects the UN’s message on tolerance and underscores the importance of open dialogue to achieve lasting peace. “Governor Fubara’s conduct serves as an inspiration, showing that tolerance is a crucial pillar for effective and sustainable governance,” Nkweke remarked.

As part of its message on World Tolerance Day, IAWPA called on all leaders across Nigeria and beyond to adopt a similar approach, urging them to draw inspiration from Governor Fubara’s example. “On this International Day of Tolerance, we honor Governor Sim Fubara and hope that leaders will see in his conduct a pathway to achieving unity over division,” the statement added.

Additionally, the association appealed to Nigerians to foster a spirit of tolerance across political, regional, and ethnic divides. “Let us work collectively towards a future where tolerance shapes our interactions, uniting rather than dividing us,” Nkweke said, calling on citizens to uphold values that contribute to societal harmony.

The IAWPA also urged the international community, development partners, and philanthropic organizations to support Rivers State, emphasizing that the state’s tolerance index is commendable. Nkweke assured stakeholders that Governor Fubara’s commitment to peaceful coexistence has safeguarded the state from division or unrest. “We encourage partners to invest in Rivers State without being dissuaded by the actions of those who may oppose the governor’s efforts,” the statement continued, underlining that the governor’s dedication to tolerance has maintained a stable social climate.

IAWPA announced that Governor Fubara would receive the “Most Tolerant Governor” award on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Government House in Port Harcourt. The presentation ceremony will be attended by distinguished guests, including the World Peace President, Ambassador Per Stafsen from the Kingdom of Denmark. This recognition celebrates Governor Fubara’s enduring commitment to tolerance and the peace-building values championed by the UN on this international observance.
