Military shuts down 98 illegal oil refining operations.

The Defence Headquarters has reported that troops of Operation Delta Safe have successfully deactivated 98 illegal refining sites across the Niger Delta region within the past week.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, disclosed this information in a statement released in Abuja.

Additionally, the troops discovered and dismantled 49 crude oil cooking ovens, 11 dugout pits, 72 boats, 21 drums, and 30 storage tanks during their operations.

Furthermore, the troops seized 1.09 million litres of stolen crude oil and 873,510 litres of illegally refined AGO, preventing oil thieves from gaining an estimated sum of N1.2 billion. Various items were also confiscated, including four speedboats, one tricycle, four pumping machines, one outboard engine, two motorcycles, two mobile phones, and three vehicles.

Major-General Buba revealed that between October 23 and October 27, the troops intercepted and arrested five suspected violent extremists and pipeline vandals, including a militant leader known as Mr. Eddy Edidiemokuma Korokoro in Delta and Bayelsa states.

Furthermore, four suspects were taken into custody, and two AK47 rifles, one locally manufactured rifle, three magazines, 96 rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, and three smoke grenade launchers were recovered.

In addition to these actions, the troops also successfully rescued four kidnapped hostages and apprehended 39 suspects involved in oil theft and other violent activities.
