Nigerian government prepares Kiri Dam for power generation
The Federal Government of Nigeria has brought 76 detained #EndBadGovernance protesters before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The protesters, who are predominantly minors, were presented before Justice Obiora Egwuatu and are facing a 10-count charge related to alleged treason and conspiracy to carry out a felony with the intention of destabilizing Nigeria.
These charges are in violation of sections 96 and 97 of the Penal Code Act.
The appearance of the defendants in court raised concerns as they appeared malnourished, with some individuals in such poor health that they had to be quickly removed from the courtroom as they were unable to stand.
Reports indicate that they appeared very ill, writhing in pain on the court floor. These individuals were among those arrested and detained during the nationwide protests that occurred from August 1 to 10, 2024, in response to the severe economic challenges facing many Nigerians, which prompted widespread grievances and demonstrations.
The arrests of the 76 protesters took place in several locations, including Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe, Jos, Katsina, and Kano.
The charges of treason and other offences have been brought against them, and the court proceedings are currently underway, with the charges being read out individually to each protester.
