Nollywood actress Funke Akindele has shared valuable advice for women, urging them not to rush into marriage due to societal pressures. In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jidenowo, she revealed her own experience and offered words of wisdom.
Funke Akindele confessed that she had previously felt compelled to settle down and have children due to the pressure she felt. However, she regretfully acknowledged that her marriage ended after just a year. To overcome this difficult period, she focused on her work as a means of distraction and healing.
She emphasized, “I want to encourage ladies who feel pressured to get married to calm down and take their time because rushing into it may lead to rushing out. That’s the lesson I learned. You see, I simply wanted to get married and do things the right way, have children, and all that. But my first marriage didn’t work out well. It ended in a terrible manner, with social media buzzing about it. I received a phone call while I was on set and it devastated me. I cried and lost some good opportunities, but I didn’t let it break me.”
As a role model for young women, Funke Akindele advised against succumbing to societal pressure. She stressed the importance of getting married because of genuine love and the desire to spend a lifetime with someone. She also urged women to have children because of their personal wishes, rather than the expectations imposed by society or peers.
She further encouraged women to ignore gossip and naysayers, emphasizing that they should live their lives according to their own happiness. She concluded by saying, “Give them the ‘sorry’ gesture and don’t care about their opinions. It’s your life, so do what brings you joy.”
