The Chief Judge of Kano State, Justice Dije Aboki, has ordered the release of 37 inmates from the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre, citing concerns over their health and prolonged detention without trial.
According to a statement by Baba Jibo, spokesperson for Kano State Judiciary, the decision was in line with legal provisions that empower the Chief Judge to periodically visit correctional facilities and release inmates when necessary to help ease overcrowding.
Justice Aboki noted that many of the inmates were suffering from severe health issues and were not receiving adequate medical attention, leaving them weak and vulnerable. She emphasized that releasing them would allow their families to provide the necessary care.
During her visit, the Chief Judge also expressed concern over the inadequate food provisions at the facility, linking the situation to the country’s ongoing economic challenges. She called on the Kano State government to step in and improve the nutritional conditions of the remaining inmates for their well-being.
