Israel Launches Targeted Invasion of Lebanon Against Hezbollah

Israeli forces have launched a targeted ground operation in Lebanon, aiming to intensify attacks on the Shi’a militant group Hezbollah. Described by Israeli military officials as a “limited, localised, and targeted” action, the invasion took place early Tuesday.

Although initial reports suggest there have been no clashes yet, Israel has advised residents of approximately 25 Lebanese villages to evacuate. Hezbollah, however, denies that Israeli forces have crossed into their territory.

This operation follows the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah by Israeli strikes last Friday, along with the deaths of several other key Hezbollah figures in recent days.

In addition to the ground incursion, Israel has escalated airstrikes in Lebanon, including bombings around Beirut. Lebanese authorities have reported that a building in a Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon was struck.

This marks Israel’s second invasion of Lebanon, the last being in 2006, when Israeli forces targeted Southern Lebanon after Hezbollah fighters killed Israeli soldiers.

Lebanese officials estimate that over 1,000 people have been killed and up to one million displaced in the past two weeks. Prime Minister Najib Mikati warned that Lebanon is facing “one of the most dangerous phases in its history.”

The conflict escalated after Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, following the group’s October 7, 2023, attacks in southern Israel, which left about 1,200 people dead and over 200 taken hostage.
