Tinubu Appoints Tegbe as Director-General for China-Nigeria Strategic Partnership

President Bola Tinubu has named Mr. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China strategic partnership. This follows the agreements made during Tinubu’s recent visit to China in early September.

Tegbe, a 1988 first-class graduate in civil engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, will report directly to the President. A fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, he brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, stated that Tegbe will be tasked with creating a strategic action plan aimed at ensuring Nigeria maximizes the benefits of its partnerships with China. Tegbe’s responsibilities will include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the partnership, working closely with Chinese counterparts, and ensuring that all objectives align with Nigeria’s national development goals.

“In his strategic plan, Tegbe will detail the specific goals, timelines, and key performance indicators for each area of cooperation. This will cover priority projects, anticipated investments, and expected socioeconomic benefits,” the statement noted.

At the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged $51 billion in financing for African countries over the next three years. President Tinubu secured commitments from China during his visit to support Nigeria’s economic diversification, infrastructure development, and job creation.

Key areas of cooperation between the two nations include expanding Nigeria’s rail network, upgrading power distribution, creating new industrial parks, and enhancing healthcare through Chinese medical support. Educational collaborations will focus on vocational training, STEM education, and academic exchanges.

Tegbe, aged 58, brings over 35 years of experience in business strategy, having previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services for KPMG in Africa. He has advised numerous Fortune 500 companies and African governments, including leading investment drives for several Nigerian states.

In his new role, Tegbe is expected to ensure the successful implementation of the agreements and partnerships between Nigeria and China.
