Kano State to Lead in Implementing New Minimum Wage, Governor Yusuf Announces

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has announced that the state will be the first to implement the new minimum wage of N70,000. The governor made this statement during a workshop on “Conflict Management for Harmonious Industrial Labour Relations” hosted by the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) in Kaduna.

Represented by Abdullahi Musa, Head of the Kano State Civil Service, Governor Yusuf emphasized the state’s commitment to leading the way in implementing the new wage policy. “To demonstrate our seriousness about this initiative, we are convening a retreat in Kaduna specifically to address minimum wage issues in Kano State,” Musa said.

In August 2024, Governor Yusuf established an advisory committee to oversee the implementation of the new minimum wage. The committee is currently in Kaduna to finalize their recommendations, with a report expected to be submitted to the governor soon. Yusuf expressed optimism that Kano will be the first to fully adopt the new wage structure.

The governor highlighted the peaceful and cooperative relationship between Kano’s workforce and the state government.

Comrade Issa Aremu, Director General of MINILS, urged workers to engage in constructive negotiations with the government, emphasizing that effective negotiation is crucial in union activities. Isah Bello Dambazau, Controller of Labour in Kaduna State, encouraged participants to unite and share insights to better navigate workplace challenges.

Dr. Raji Michael, Director of the Trade Union Education Department at MINILS, stated that the workshop’s goal was to enhance participants’ understanding of conflict resolution and provide them with practical tools to foster peaceful industrial relations.
