Gani Adams Criticizes Tinubu Over Unfulfilled Promises

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has expressed disappointment in President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing the President of failing to meet the expectations of many Nigerians who supported his rise to power.

Adams specifically criticized Tinubu’s handling of the petroleum sector, particularly the recent hike in the price of premium motor spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, which he said has worsened the economic hardship across the country.

In an open letter to the President, Adams wrote, “When you introduced the ‘Emilokan’ slogan during the 2023 elections, many Nigerians believed you would bring about positive change as a modern, democratic leader, compared to Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration deepened poverty and insecurity between 2015 and 2023. Today, those expectations have been shattered. Many Nigerians feel disappointed, believing you were the messiah they had hoped for.”

Adams noted that the price of fuel, which was less than N200 when Tinubu took office, has skyrocketed to over N1,000, making life increasingly difficult for Nigerians. He described the administration as “indifferent and insensitive” to the suffering of the populace, accusing Tinubu of enacting policies that exacerbate the country’s economic struggles.

He warned, “Your administration’s draconian fuel price increases are a recipe for disaster. Nigerians can no longer bear this economic burden.”

Adams also emphasized that he was under pressure from citizens to speak up due to his close ties with Tinubu as fellow Yoruba leaders, adding that the handling of the petroleum sector under the current administration has been “opaque and corrupt.” He further stressed that any advisors telling the President that all is well are not being honest.

The letter continued with concerns about the rising cost of living, referencing how the naira’s value has deteriorated from less than N740 to the dollar in May 2023, to over N1,600 today. Adams questioned the economic strategies of key officials such as Finance Minister Wale Edun and CBN Governor Yemi Cardoso, both of whom were close allies of Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor.

Adams also drew parallels between Tinubu’s leadership and Adolf Hitler’s authoritarian regime in Nazi Germany, warning that the government’s current trajectory could lead to disaster, similar to what happened in Germany under Hitler’s rule.

He concluded by saying, “I hope I am wrong, but I see alarming similarities between Hitler’s rise to power and the current situation in Nigeria.”
