President Bola Tinubu has wrapped up his official visit to China, calling the trip a significant success. Addressing members of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) and the wider Nigerian community at the China World Hotel, President Tinubu highlighted the fruitful discussions held with Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, as well as his participation in the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit.
During his address, President Tinubu emphasized the progress made in enhancing cooperation across various sectors such as infrastructure, trade, finance, energy, green economy, and mining. He encouraged Nigerians abroad to continue representing their country with integrity and to contribute positively to Nigeria’s global image. “Our diversity is a strength and a commitment to service. We must strive to be exemplary citizens,” he stated.
The President also underscored the value of discipline and national service, citing China’s disciplined society as a model for Nigerians. “To gain global respect, we must mirror the discipline and commitment seen here in China,” he emphasized.
Reassuring the Nigerian diaspora of his administration’s dedication to economic reforms, President Tinubu pointed to recent measures, including adjustments in fuel pricing, as part of broader efforts to build sustainable infrastructure, enhance educational quality, and ensure reliable electricity. “We are making bold decisions to advance our country. Changes in fuel prices, for instance, are necessary to enable us to develop infrastructure and services comparable to those in China,” he explained.
Reflecting on the success of his visit, President Tinubu reiterated his resolve to replicate China’s infrastructure advancements in Nigeria, underscoring the need for tough but essential decisions to drive development. He also addressed the challenge of securing national consensus on key issues, reaffirming his commitment to leading with a capable team.
Dr. Oche Barnabas, President of NIDO China, commended President Tinubu for his efforts to strengthen Nigeria-China relations, particularly in trade and investment. He also voiced support for Nigeria’s “4Ds” initiative, which aims to foster development and collaboration within the diaspora community, and requested the President’s assistance in advocating for Nigeria to be recognized as a native English-speaking nation in China. This designation, Dr. Barnabas argued, would enhance job and educational opportunities for Nigerians in China.
In closing, the Chairman of NIDO China expressed the organization’s continued support for President Tinubu’s administration and its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s international standing.
