Nigeria Appointed Chair of AFRIGIST Governing Council

Nigeria has been elected as the chair of the Governing Council for the African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST) during the institute’s 55th council meeting held at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.

Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, will represent Nigeria and lead the council for the next two years. A statement released by the Office of the Surveyor General, through its head of press and public relations, Sani Datti, confirmed the development.

The council meeting also approved the Republic of Liberia as its newest member and established a statutory committee representing various member states.

In his acceptance speech, Adebomehin assured that his tenure would be marked by significant progress. “On behalf of the Nigerian government, I pledge that this tenure will be one that all member countries will be proud of. I would also like to extend my gratitude to the outgoing chairman from Ghana for his dedication and leadership,” he said.

Adebomehin promised to adhere to the council’s established principles and emphasized the importance of collaboration among member countries. He highlighted the need for infrastructural improvements to meet the growing demands of AFRIGIST’s students and faculty, creating an environment conducive to learning and research.

AFRIGIST, a bilingual (English and French) intergovernmental institution, now comprises nine member states, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Nigeria (the host country), Senegal, and its newest member, Liberia. The institute enjoys full diplomatic status in Nigeria and welcomes membership from all African nations.
