National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has assured that security agencies will operate with professionalism to protect both citizens and electoral materials during the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.
Speaking in Abuja at a meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ribadu, represented by Hassan Abdullahi, Director of Internal Security in the NSA’s office, cautioned voters to adhere strictly to the law, warning that violators would face severe consequences.
Ribadu, who also serves as Co-chair of ICCES, highlighted the history of violence associated with some politicians and their supporters in these states. He stressed that any attempts to undermine, interfere with, or disrupt the peaceful conduct of the elections would be considered a direct attack on the nation’s democratic principles.
He further urged security personnel and election officials to ensure that every ballot is safeguarded, every voter feels secure, and the integrity of the election process is maintained.
Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun also reassured the public that the police force would deploy adequate personnel to protect lives and property throughout the elections.
INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who also chairs ICCES, appealed to political party leaders, candidates, and their supporters in Edo and Ondo to avoid actions that could inflame tensions as the campaign period progresses.
The Edo governorship election is scheduled for September 21, while the Ondo election is set for November 16.
