Mrs. Favour Igiebor, the woman captured in a viral video tearing her husband’s passport at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, has spoken out, defending her actions and criticizing those who judged her without understanding the full context.
In a video statement responding to the widespread backlash, Mrs. Igiebor addressed popular bloggers, including Tunde Ednut and Instablog, urging them to consider her perspective before passing judgment. “I’m not a mad woman who would just act like that,” she said, adding that she has endured significant personal struggles. “So many of you are just commenting on the video. Friends and people I haven’t spoken to in years are now calling me. I am not like that.”
She explained that she chose to destroy her husband’s passport in Nigeria, rather than in Europe, to avoid causing him greater stress abroad. “What if I had done this in Europe where we were coming from? I didn’t want to put him through that, so I did it in Nigeria,” she stated. Mrs. Igiebor also dismissed the criticism she has received, emphasizing that those who do not understand the situation should refrain from commenting.
The woman hinted at ongoing family issues and expressed frustration with her husband’s handling of their affairs, including control over her social media accounts. “I have gone through a lot, with family issues every time. My husband controls a lot of things for me, including my social media pages.”
Addressing calls for her arrest, she challenged her critics to hold her accountable, describing the emotional toll her marriage has taken on her. “I cry every night and day, even after having three children. I want to enjoy what I suffered for with him,” she expressed.
Mrs. Igiebor also criticized her husband’s attempts to placate her with gifts, suggesting they were insufficient to resolve deeper issues in their relationship. “He bought me an iPhone to calm me down, but these problems have been ongoing for years,” she revealed, adding that she now suffers from heartache and headaches due to the stress.
In the wake of the incident, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a formal investigation. In a statement released on Sunday, the NIS confirmed that Mrs. Igiebor has been identified and summoned for questioning. The statement noted that if the allegations are confirmed, her actions could constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
The viral video, widely circulated on social media, shows Mrs. Igiebor tearing her husband’s passport, with the torn pieces scattered on the floor. When confronted, she defiantly responded in Pidgin English, “I tore it. Is it yours?” She was later seen walking away with her children, leaving her husband standing dejectedly with a baby in a stroller.
The case has ignited widespread debate online, with many calling for legal action against Mrs. Igiebor, while others have expressed sympathy for her situation.
