Organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympics have canceled Tuesday’s open water swimming training session due to pollution in the River Seine.
This cancellation marks the fifth instance of swim familiarization sessions being called off due to water quality concerns during the Games.
Additionally, the men’s race has been postponed by one day.
The latest cancellation followed the mixed team relay in the triathlon, which took place in the Seine. The river is also scheduled to host marathon swimming events.
Although tests showed that enterococci bacteria levels in the water had fallen below the acceptable threshold, other pollution indicators were still problematic.
A new familiarization session is planned for Wednesday, with the women’s 10km race scheduled for Thursday and the men’s race for Friday.
Anne Descamps, a spokesperson for World Aquatics, expressed confidence in the events proceeding as scheduled, citing positive weather trends.
Should the Seine remain unsuitable, organizers have a contingency plan to relocate the marathon swimming events to Vaires-sur-Marne, east of Paris, where rowing and canoeing competitions are being held.
Last Tuesday, the men’s Olympic triathlon was postponed just hours before the event due to last-minute water quality tests revealing unhealthy pollution levels in the River Seine.
