The Oba of Yoruba in Kano, Murtala Otisese, has appealed for calm amid the ongoing unrest in Kano, where thugs have been looting and attacking individuals.
In a statement issued to the press yesterday, Otisese emphasized the constitutional right of individuals to protest peacefully, urging against violence.
“As a leader and representative of the Yoruba people in Kano, I acknowledge the legitimate right of Nigerian citizens to protest grievances, as enshrined in our constitution – the foundation of our country. This fundamental right is a cornerstone of our democracy, enabling citizens to express dissatisfaction and seek redress,” he stated.
Otisese highlighted the difficult times Nigeria is facing, with soaring inflation and low purchasing power severely impacting households across the nation.
“The devaluation of our currency, the naira, coupled with the removal of the oil subsidy, has worsened the economic hardship faced by many Nigerians. The distress is palpable, and the voices of the aggrieved are resonating throughout the nation. While the grievances are legitimate and the hardships undeniable, I believe that violent protests are not the ultimate solution to our woes,” he concluded.
