LASUTH achieves groundbreaking non-surgical heart repair

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, has successfully performed a non-surgical repair for a heart defect known as Ventricular Septal Defect Closure.

This revolutionary procedure, conducted by experts at LASUTH’s cardiac catheterization laboratory, offers patients an alternative to open heart surgery.

According to Dr. Oluwaseye Oladimeji, an Interventional Cardiologist at LASUTH, this non-surgical approach involves closing the hole in the heart using a disc-like device, without the need for chest incisions. Patients undergoing this procedure can be discharged within two hours, enabling them to return home swiftly. LASUTH continues to be at the forefront of innovative healthcare solutions, with over 120 successful procedures conducted in their Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory since its establishment in the second quarter of 2022.
