The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has appealed to Nigerians to forgo the planned nationwide protests amid the ongoing economic crisis.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Akume emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is actively working to address the country’s numerous challenges.
“The current economic hardships will soon ease, and we will all experience lasting prosperity,” Akume stated. “The government of President Tinubu acknowledges the right to peaceful protest, but caution and vigilance are essential. Protests are susceptible to being hijacked by bandits, insurgents, and other criminals. We encourage dialogue and are open to such engagements.”
August 1 Hunger Protest
The August 1 hunger protest is a nationwide demonstration calling for improvements in Nigeria’s economic situation and the reversal of certain government policies, particularly the removal of petrol subsidies.
Protesters are demanding the reduction of fuel prices to below N300 per litre, the reinstatement of affordable electricity tariffs, and the rollback of import duties to previous levels.
In response, President Tinubu, his ministers, and other concerned Nigerians have repeatedly urged the youth to remain patient, asserting that protest is not the best solution.
