Nigerian lightweight boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance ahead of her opening bout at the Paris Olympics.
The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Saturday that Ogunsemilore, a bronze medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and African Games champion, tested positive for furosemide, a diuretic listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited substances list.
The sample was collected in Paris on Thursday, just one day before the Olympics opening ceremony, and was analyzed by a WADA-accredited laboratory, which reported the results on Saturday.
“The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended until the resolution of the matter in line with the World Anti-Doping Code and the International Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules,” the ITA stated on its website.
As a result of the suspension, Ogunsemilore is prohibited from competing, training, coaching, or participating in any Olympic-related activities during the Paris 2024 Games.
Ogunsemilore retains the right to contest her provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and can also request an analysis of her B sample.
She was scheduled to compete against Taiwan’s Wu Shih Yi in a round of 16 match on Tuesday.
