Kinshasa, DR Congo
Tragedy struck at a live concert in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, leaving at least nine people dead and several others injured. Among the victims was a 10-year-old child, as confirmed by local media.
Gospel singer and pastor Mike Kalambay was performing at the 80,000-seat Martyrs Stadium in Kinshasa when the incident occurred. The Governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba, issued a statement attributing the disaster to “excesses and crowd movements.”
In response to the tragedy, DR Congo’s justice minister has launched an investigation into the conduct of the police officers present at the time and the event organizer, Maajabu Gospel.
In a statement on Saturday, Kalambay expressed his deep sorrow over the fatalities, blaming “troublemakers” for the chaos. He noted that there were 2,000 police officers at the event who attempted to manage the situation.
The event organizers stated that approximately 30,000 people attended the concert, significantly fewer than the venue’s maximum capacity.
As a result of the incident, the Martyrs Stadium, a major landmark and one of the largest stadiums in Africa, has been closed until further notice. Kinshasa city authorities have urged the police to enhance security measures and have reminded event organizers to strictly follow safety regulations.
