Edo Police Vow to Capture Killers of Slain Officer

The Edo State Police Command has pledged to apprehend those responsible for the killing of Inspector Onuh Akoh.

Inspector Akoh was fatally shot by suspected armed thugs along Airport Road in Benin City on Thursday. He was serving as the orderly for Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state. Akoh was struck by a bullet when suspected political thugs fired at the convoys of reinstated Deputy Governor Phillip Shaibu and Senator Okpebholo as they were leaving Benin Airport.

In a statement by its Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the Command expressed condolences to Akoh’s family and urged the public to remain calm, assuring that an investigation is underway to identify those behind the attack.

“On the aforementioned date and time, Rt. Hon. Phillip Shaibu and Sen. Monday Okpebholo arrived at Benin Airport from Abuja, where their supporters had gathered to welcome them. Suddenly, hoodlums suspected to be political thugs appeared with guns and other dangerous weapons and began shooting sporadically. In the process, Inspector Onuh Akoh, attached to Sen. Monday Okpebholo, was hit by a bullet. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital, and his body has been deposited at the military hospital in Benin City,” Nwabuzor detailed.

The Commissioner of Police appealed to the public to stay calm, continue to be law-abiding, and go about their lawful activities, assuring that the Police and other security agencies are in control of the situation in the state.

He also issued a stern warning to criminal elements, urging them to desist from actions that could disrupt peace and order.

“The Commissioner reiterates the Command’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of law-abiding citizens in Edo State. He vows to arrest, name, shame, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous act,” the PPRO stated.
