Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has ordered the immediate closure of Saint Academy in Busa Buji, Jos, following a building collapse.
Governor Mutfwang issued the directive during a visit to the collapse site on Saturday morning.
He also ordered the arrest of artisanal miners operating near residential areas in the state.
During his inspection of the damaged school building, accompanied by the principal and staff, Governor Mutfwang expressed his regret over the incident and emphasized the necessity of closing the school to prevent further risks. “It is unfortunate what has happened, but we cannot take any further chances. This school is closed down immediately. We need to send this message particularly to owners of private schools,” he stated.
The building collapse, which occurred during classes on Friday, resulted in fatalities and injuries. The deceased have been taken to various morgues, while the injured are receiving medical treatment in hospitals across Jos.
Governor Mutfwang assured that the government would ensure prompt medical attention for the victims and directed all major hospitals in Jos to prioritize their treatment, regardless of documentation or payment.
Having previously visited the scene of the collapsed two-storey structure, the Governor extended his condolences to the families of the deceased students and promised that the state government would cover the treatment costs for the injured students.
Radio Nigeria reported that several people were killed and many injured when the two-storey building at Saint Academy Secondary School in Busa Buji, Jos, collapsed while students were taking their third-term examinations.
