A section of a two-story residential building in the 2.2 area of Kubwa, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), collapsed on Saturday morning, trapping several individuals in the debris.
The structure, located next to the popular Cupid Hotel on Cupid Road, was previously known as the Al-Hilal Hotel.
Reports indicate that two people have been rescued so far.
Federal and FCT Fire Services, along with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), are currently engaged in evacuation and rescue operations.
This incident follows the tragic collapse of a two-story building at The Saint Academy in Plateau State just 24 hours earlier, which resulted in the deaths of 22 students and injuries to 123 others.
According to a Facebook post by NEMA, 30 individuals remain hospitalized following the Plateau State collapse. The rescue operation at that site has concluded, and the area has been cleared.
Building collapses have been a recurring issue in 2024, with Nairametrics reporting that 43 buildings have fallen this year. This information was sourced from the Building Collapse Prevention Guild, an advocacy group comprised of built environment professionals.
These collapses are often attributed to various factors, including ongoing renovations, poor construction practices, non-compliance with building codes, and the use of substandard materials.
