Meta announced on Friday that it is lifting certain restrictions previously imposed on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
The company stated that the decision was made to ensure that Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, has equal access to the platforms as Democrat President Joe Biden.
“Our responsibility to allow political expression means that the American people should hear from the presidential nominees on an equal basis,” Meta said in a statement. “As a result, former President Trump, as the Republican Party’s nominee, will no longer be subject to heightened suspension penalties.”
Trump’s accounts were indefinitely suspended after he commended individuals who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
They were reinstated in early 2023 with the condition that his posts would be monitored for further violations, potentially resulting in suspensions ranging from one month to two years.
